Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real

Pretty

I finally finished Pastor Boyer's quilt. Dad and I brought it to him last Friday. (Dad picked out the fabric, approved the pattern, and I sewed it together.)

Funny

I was quilting along but forgot to pay attention to where the backing was in relation to the needle. It didn't work.

What it's supposed to look like:

Real

In general, the only part of science that makes me happy is the experiments. (We use Apologia's science books. I'm in biology right now.) One of the paragraphs in the book said something about setting fire to sugar to make smoke, carbon dioxide, and some other stuff I don't remember.

The sugar didn't catch fire, but it did do this:

Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real

Pretty

Lizzie wanted a wall hanging quilt to act like a bed header. So, I told her that if she got the fabric, I'd make it for her. This is what she's picked out so far. I'm looking for solid, dark brown fabric for the rest.

Happy

A few weeks ago, the semminarian the church supports came to visit and do a church service. He and his wife play Settlers of Cataan, and so we had to play it. Mrs. Badenhop apparently has played it once before, but she's won both times. Nobody can figure out why.

Funny

That's Arane. She (and Lizzie and Justin, but they don't count :P) came to visit for a while. They live right on the edge of Hurricane Sandy, so they stayed for a little longer until they were sure that there'd be power. But Arane's sprout (pony-tail) is really funny.

"License is required for any use beyond individual consumption" So, if I want to eat the cloth, I have to get permission from Scuffy's owners? Shucks.

Real

I got these from a quilting store about half an hour away. It's the Scuffy the Tugboat cloth that the Funny came off of.

Mom is holding this up.

It's supposed to be used to make a book, but there're enough of those panels that I can use them in two different quilts. (They're really big panels.)

Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real

I keep forgetting to do this.

Lizzie, Justin, Arane, and Grandma came over for a while over the past two weeks. Lizzie and Justin were planning on staying for only a week, but they were right on the tail edge of Sandy, so they decided to stay a while longer.

Happy

This is a quilt for the lady who had our car when it exploded. Hopefully she'll be happy to get it.

Funny

That's what happens in a house where everybody knows or is learning Greek. It says says, "udroxlorothias loratadin" (Dad's medicine" and "bon ami".

("And they used Bon Ami!")

Real

That's Lizzie, Mom, Arane, Grandma, and I on the front porch. That's an awful lot of us.

Reformation Day and All Saint's Day

On October 31, 1517 an Augustinian monk named Martin Luther nailed the 95-Theses to the Castle Church in Wittenberg and accidentally started the Protestant revolution. (We're Protestant because we protested against the Catholic Church. The "ant" is just a handy Latin left-over.) (If people want to nail topics for debate to a church door, check to see if the door is glass first. If the door is glass, there's a nifty new invention called tape, which is a kind of sticky paper. Use that instead; most pastors don't like it when they go into the church and find out the door is shattered. They prefer nail holes.)

On November 1, every year for centuries, Christians remember the other Christians who have died. Only Catholics, as far as I know, are the ones who pray for the saints. Most Lutherans probably ignore All Saint's Day, but some will actually remember the saints. (Also, all Christians are saints. Even the alive Christians. But I wouldn't go up to Aly and say, "Hey, Saint Aly, how're you?" because that'd be goofy.

On, and Reformation Day is a civil holiday in Germany, according to Brigitte--a native German in my Greek class and one of Dad's classmates.

Also, go here for a good post by Veith: http://www.geneveith.com/2012/10/31/reforming-the-church/. (I don't know if Veith is a pastor, lay-person, professor, or what. We always call him Veith around the house.)

Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real

I got sick this week with a killer cold (which spread to Dad) and so didn't take many pictures. (It's too early to get sick! It normally doesn't go around until January and February when I have some prior notice and can get ahead in school and the like. Germs are not very considerate.)

Pretty

Sausages are pretty. The pig that those came from was a happy little porker probably.

Happy

I like to cook supper a lot and do it every Thursday and Saturday. It makes me happy because it smells good and so far nobody's been poisoned from it.

Funny

This egg had a birthmark on it. See that weird lump? That's its birthmark.

Real

One of our potatoes went bad and so I looked at it through the microscope. The part of the fungus from under the skin was all lumpy like a volcano. The part on top of the skin looked like an alien. The brown part of the potato looked like paper.

Turkish Roman Bath

Archaeologists found a Roman bath in southern Turkey. That's cool! Here's a news article about it: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/09/19/roman_empire_mosaic_turkey/

Pretty, Happy, Funny, Real

I keep forgetting to do this until after the link-up-do-dad-thing is shut.

Happy

Mom went to help Lizzie and Justin with Arane during the first two weeks of school, which is when the students, parents, and teachers all get hopelessly confused and/or damage the software and Lizzie and Justin have to help them. It's a busy time.

Olivia's family gave Arane that box thing. Arane likes it a lot.

She also likes those stacking block things.

Funny

Mom found Benny in Arane's bassinet one day. The stinker.

Real

I keep finding subjects that sound really fun to take...So I get the books and learn it. Those are the books (and CD) I'm using right now.
